It’s no surprise that with more people in the workforce, it can be tricky to navigate the job market. The reality is that more and more people are searching for their dream job with the same credentials as the next person. Having a college diploma or even a bachelor’s degree doesn’t always guarantee a wealth of job opportunities. Don’t worry though, there is a light at the end of the dimly lit tunnel.
To set yourself up for continued career success, your best opportunities will likely come from your network connections.
These are people you’ve met along the way that are in your industry or an industry that relates to yours, that you’ve added to your professional community. These contacts may lead to direct connections, or remain acquaintances, but believe it or not, they are most likely to assist in your employment search. These employment saviours likely have nothing to lose by sending a recommendation your way. It’s also likely to be low risk for them if it doesn’t work out.
Our educational system has taught us that knowledge is power, and while in most cases that’s accurate, you have to get in the door in order to use this knowledge. A lot of times this can be the most complicated part of the process. The key to preventing this is to always be prepared for it, even when it isn’t an immediate need.
You never want to be networking when you need a position.
In fact, that’s when you want to be utilizing your resources. You should be networking and gaining resources before it becomes a need. In addition, you should never “burn a bridge” so to speak. Even if your employer is a nightmare to deal with, always keep your head high and leave with your reputation intact. You never know who that person is connected to or how they may impact your employment in the future.
Lastly, do be kind to those in your network. If you know of a position that someone would be perfect for, mention it to them or better yet, offer to be a professional reference if you’re able to do so. Not only will this help them out in a time in need, but it could also come back to better your opportunities in the future.
